Scotty Nguyen was born in Nha Trang, Vietnam in 1962 and moved to America when he was 14. He lived with several host families, the first one being in Chicago. He later relocated to Orange County, California where he first learned how to play poker. Most of his teenage years were ruled by rebellion. He routinely stole bikes, cheated in school, and would often copy his friends’ answers on tests. Scotty was eventually expelled for breaking into his high school.
Scotty's poker career started out rough. He frequently played in numerous casinos in Southern California and he suffered plenty of losses. He even spent time as a dealer after he went broke. He slowly built up his bankroll and improved his play. Today, he's considered one of the most feared No Limit players and he's also an excellent Omaha Hi/Lo player.
Scotty Nguyen won four total World Series of Poker bracelets, including the World Championship in 1998. He was heads up with Kevin McBride when he uttered his most famous words of all time, "You call this one and it's all over, Baby!" There was a full house showing on the board as Scotty smiled and sipped his beer. McBride called, thinking he was going to split the pot with Scotty. Instead, McBride lost to a higher full house and Scotty Nguyen won his first World Series of Poker title.
Scotty's other WSoP bracelet wins include first place victories in Omaha Hi/Lo (1997 and 2001) and Pot Limit Omaha (2001). Scotty has also appeared at five final tables on the World Poker Tour. Although he has never won an event, he has accumulated over $600,000 in WPT career earnings.
Scotty has also put up some impressive statistics. Since 2000, he has finished in the money in over 100 tournaments. In his career, he has won almost $4 million in tournament prize money. He is confident that if he makes a final table, then he's going to win the entire tournament. Not too many players have that killer instinct and that's what separates Scotty Nguyen from the rest of the pack.
Scotty Nguyen is a charismatic person so it's not weird to note that he appeared in a poker movie called The Big Blind (1999). Also, he made several guest appearances on talk shows including Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Scotty is very generous towards his large family and it would take years for him to tell you about all of his relatives. He bought his mother a huge house in Vietnam with his poker winnings and routinely flies home to visit his family members. Scotty currently lives in Las Vegas, NV and can often be heard adding his trademark "baby" at the end of each sentence he speaks.
