Steve Paul-Ambrose, a 22 year-old student from the University of Waterloo in Canada, won PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) late last week. The third edition of the tournament was hosted by Kerzner International’s famous Atlantis Resort and Casino on Paradise Island (Bahamas). Paul-Ambrose won $1,363,100 and a seat into the WPT Championship event worth $25,000, after qualifying in one of PokerStars online satellites for just $100.

Here’s who made the PCA's final table including starting chip counts:

  • Seat 1: Steve Paul-Ambrose, $1,780,000
  • Seat 2: David Singer, $2,535,000
  • Seat 3: Brook Lyter, $875,000
  • Seat 4: Michael Higgins, $794,000
  • Seat 5: Anders Henrikkson, $1,033,000
  • Seat 6: Aurangzeb Sheikh, $231,000

Aurangzeb Sheikh held pocket rockets in the big blind on the very first hand, but lost to Paul-Ambrose's sevens who made a set on the flop. Sheikh took sixth place. An hour later Anders Henrikkson finished fifth after his KQ lost to Brook Lyter's AA. Shortly after that, Paul-Ambrose took the chip lead after winning a big hand from Singer. Michael Higgins went out in fourth place and won $327,100.

Paul-Ambrose continued to push the other two players for the next hour or so, increasing his chip lead to the point he couldn't lose. Or so it seemed, because at that point he moved all in with top pair against Singer, who also held top pair but with his kicker in trouble. Unfortunately for Paul-Ambrose, Singer won the $4 million pot with a runner-runner straight. But it was Singer who eventually went out in fifth place when he lost pocket kings against Paul-Ambrose's AQ.

After six hours of play it was now a race between Brook Lyter and Steve Paul-Ambrose. The final hand saw Brook going all in with top pair after a big raise by Paul-Ambrose, who held an open-ended straight draw. Paul-Ambrose made his straight and won the third edition of PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, netting him $1,363,100 and a seat into the WPT Championship event worth $25,000. Paul-Ambrose qualified online for the $8,000 buy-in tourney after winning a ticket in one of PokerStars $100 online satellites.

The PCA tournament is a WPT event sponsored by online poker room PokerStars, currently the second largest poker room worldwide according to PokerPulse. PokerStars has awarded over $1 billion dollars in prize money over the last few years, and it prides itself on being the "home" of the World Series of Poker champions Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer and Joe Hachem, who all are official representatives of PokerStars.

The third edition of the tourney was hosted by the Atlantis Resort and Casino, one of the world's premier entertainment and gaming destinations. Located on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, the resort boasts the largest casino in the Caribbean (850 slots, 78 gaming tables and a race and sportsbook), a 63-slip deep-water marina, endless beaches, a 18-hole golf course, a 34-acre waterscape and a marine habitat second only to Mother Nature. The Atlantis resort was inspired by the Atlantis myth, and in fact showcases a (fictional) recreation of the legendary lost continent in "The Dig".
