The rising pre-eminence of female poker players was recognized by
Victor Chandler Poker this week in a press release. According to the
UK-based poker website, Victor Chandler Poker, the operator of Vcpoker.com,
traditional male-dominated poker is now giving way to the fairer sex.
The website reported that one in six new players joining VCPoker.com
are women – up from virtually zero just two years ago. The typical
female player tends to be between 24 and 25, Internet savvy, shop
online and has a professional business career, the web metrics suggest.
"Women are being increasingly attracted to the excitement
of online poker. Many professional women now shop extensively online
and it’s natural that they should explore other ways of having
fun and spending their money online," said a spokesperson
for the poker site.
Related research from Cambridge Professor, Simon Baron-Cohen in his
book “The Essential Difference” suggests that men
and women do show different personality traits. Dr.Cohen says these
traits undoubtedly influence how both men and women play poker.
Internal company research suggests that, with increased media attention,
poker tournaments, TV shows, poker is finding new fans in the women’s
segment. Adding to it, is the Internet which creates a safe environment.
"Logging on to a poker website is nowhere near as intimidating
as walking into a male-dominated casino. Good online poker rooms are
moderated, mostly by women," reports VC Poker.
InfoPowa thinks that the best baseline to this story comes from a
new female-targeted poker site, where a member was recently quoted
as saying that women were natural poker players. "We've
been bluffing men for years!" she said.
